Ex S69 Sondernklass Queen's Maiden

The origins of the Sondernklasse yachts go back to 1898. Quentin, English sailor and sailing enthusiast II. The commitment of the German Emperor William called for the creation of the special department. Quentin argued the German-English joint competitions and the positive effects of sports diplomacy to the monarch during the Kiel Weeks.

After the trial II. Vilmos entrusted the President of the German Sailing Association Adolf Burmester and Prof. Shipbuilding engineer Carl Busley, to develop a special race class. The model is English 19 it was a class with legs. The Sondernklasse was officially born in 1898 at the Lübeck Yacht Club. Newly built Sondernklass sailboats were presented for the first time in 1900 as part of the Kiel Weeks 16 with a newly built unit. They fought to win the extremely prestigious Samoa Cup for the Imperial Prize founded by the Emperor. This was the foundation of German sailing. This was the first competition class, which was recognized as an international class, and built and sailed according to a uniform formula in different countries. Among others in Belgium, in Denmark, in Spain, International competitions were held in France.

The class requirements were as follows:
The nominal sail surface is max. 51 nm, the minimum weight 1830 kg, the palisade thickness min. 16 mm, and the length of the cockpit is max. 2,50 m, the number of sailors in a competition 3 main. The yachts also had to meet an important formula, which said so:

The length of the waterline, the sum of the greatest width and the greatest draft could not be more than 9,75 meter (32 English foot).

Sailors and women paid for the races were not allowed on board. They are noble, landowners, bankers, brokers high-ranking military officers took part in the regattas.

1906-from the Kieli Yacht Club and the Eastern Yacht Club organized joint races on the east coast of the USA for their special class yachts. These competitions gave valuable impetus to the international construction of Sondernklass Yachts. The European, mainly among German and US designers and sailors alike, there was a huge competition. Famous designers: Nathanael Herreshoff (USA), Max Oertz, Wily von Hacht, Henry Rasmussen (Germans) made this special class one of the most progressive racing classes of its time. Kb. 200 db Yachts were built only in Germany. Only from this fleet 21-22 active ship survived.
II. William 3 db Sondernklasse was also built, with which the high-ranking military officers of the Potsdam Guard Regiment competed. The Emperor's brother is Prince Heinrich 17 db Sondernklasse was built together with a friend of the Hamburg wholesaler Richard Krogmann. All the yachts were named Tilly after Krogmann's wife Mathilde. The most famous is Tilly XV, built in 1912 as the 15th in the order. (S 66). They were only able to win the Samoa Cup with this Tilly-Yacht.

Previously, the waterline of the hulls was long compared to Tilly XV. In 1911, Nathanael Herreshoff in the USA designed a Sondernklasse with a brilliant trick (a Bibelot-ot). In order to, so that the construction waterline of your plan is extra short, developed a concave shaped hull. A 12 meter-long hull does not even submerge half of its length. Under the gentle pressure of a hint of breeze, the "vehicle" leans to the side, her waterline quickly lengthens, and this has a positive effect on speed. This development became such a success, that the German Emperor bought the ship as a model for the new German designs.

Hedy (From Molch from S69)

Hedy its design and construction already followed the Herreshoff direction, Bartoldy Aron to your order.
Bartoldy Aront named the most loyal Sondernklass sailor, for decades, participated in countless competitions in this class. According to his memoirs 8 db. had a special class sailboat built, some sources 9 db special yachts are displayed next to Bartoldy Aron's name. Today, only two ships from his collection have survived. One is Hedy ex Molch, With sail number S69, the other is located on Lake Constance with sail number S11, gull, ex Angela.

Bartoldy Aron it was therefore built on Hedy's order in 1912 in W. von Hacht's workshop in Hamburg, 439-with construction number.

1926-ig competed with him, which was an unusually long time for obsessive sailors in that era.

The original dimensions of the ship: 12 meters long, its widest point 2,31 meter, dive: 1,60 meter, weight: 1850 kg, waterline length 5,8 meter.

It is owned by the Langer family 1930-the ship was built in, they renamed her Hedy. Dr. Gustav Langer raced successfully with Hedy on the Attersee.

The 1980-as for years, the condition of the ship was in a critical state. Roland Langer (Dr. Gustav Langer fia) brought Hedy ami for complete reconstruction in our workshop 1993-from to 1995 held. Roland Langer electric 1997-ben and his son Stephan inherited Hedy.

2018 in November we got that news from him, that a terrible storm hit the lake, which tore Hedy from her buoy. The ship is practically no damage, suffered, for the third time (1912, 1993-94, 2022-24) must also be rebuilt. The Langer family deliberated for two years, what do they do?, and finally they decided, they don't get involved in this big project. They offered us the ship as a gift.

That was "only" our task, to look for people who are sensitive to historic wooden ships, they want to create value in this area, and last but not least, they are wealthy. We finally managed to find two Hungarian sportsmen among our sailor acquaintances who are sacrificing to save a cult piece of German sailing construction.. The former Hedy, As Queen will shine on the waves of our lake, among a good number of beautiful 'Princesses'.

Hedy was built in 1912 in the workshop of W. von Hacht in Hamburg with construction number 439.
